Brad Marchand's comments about Jeremy Swayman's contract situation are causing concern among Bruins fans.
As Bruins training camp approaches, Jeremy Swayman, a restricted free agent, still hasn't signed a new deal. While it's a positive sign that Swayman and the Bruins chose to skip arbitration, suggesting they're close to an agreement, the deal isn't finalized yet.
Last week, Swayman attended a captains practice at Warrior Ice Arena, and Brad Marchand was asked about his teammate's contract. Although Marchand tried to remain positive, his comments didn't reassure fans. His lack of enthusiasm made it seem like negotiations might be more complicated than anticipated.
"It's a big topic of conversation with the fans and the media, and this is part of the business, and we all are really looking forward to when it does get done and the process is over and he is back with the group," Marchand told reporters Thursday, per The Boston Globe. "But that's obviously out of our hands and we don't get involved in any of that. So it'll be great when everything gets kind of squared away."
Head coach Jim Montgomery also stayed quiet on the details and referred questions to GM Don Sweeney, adding to fans' unease. While there's still hope that Swayman's contract will be settled before the season starts, it's unclear if he'll be ready for the opening games.
