Times have been somewhat tumultuous in Calgary as of late. In the last year the team has lost multiple superstar caliber players, their head coach, and even their general manager. As much as things change though, others stay the same.
Earlier today the Flames announced they had re-signed Mikhail Backlund to a two-year contract. The Veteran centre was on an expiring contract due at the end of this season. In the process, they also announced that Backlund would be the team's next captain.
Notably, Backlund had been very vocal about wanting to be the team's next captain. The veteran already has over 900 games played in the NHL, all with the Flames. With this new contract, he is very likely to have played at least 1000 games with the organization before he retires.
According to capfriendly, Johnston was right on the money. Backlund's new contract is for two years and it carries a cap hit of 4.5 million dollars per year. He was also awarded a modified no trade clause. He will be allowed to submit a list of ten teams he is willing to be traded to before the beginning of each season.
