The Carolina Hurricanes are set to buy out one of the worst contracts in the NHL according to insider Elliotte Friedman.
The Hurricanes have made some strong moves recently, but their deal with Jesperi Kotkaniemi is starting to look worse. After another disappointing playoff performance, it seems the Hurricanes might regret signing Kotkaniemi to an eight-year deal. According to Elliotte Friedman, the Hurricanes are likely to buy out his contract this off-season, which could save them a lot of money.
Friedman mentioned that the Hurricanes might buy out Kotkaniemi's contract to free up cap space:
EF thinks #CauseChaos will buyout Kotkaniemi
EF mentions #Canucks won't double down to bring back Hronek just because they gave a 1st to get him, should be price himself out of VAN
Marek wonders about Silovs, an RFA. EF thinks he backup Demko next year

If the Hurricanes proceed with the buyout, it would cost them just $835,000 per year for the next 10 years, ultimately saving them around $20 million over the length of his contract, according to CapFriendly. This makes financial sense given Kotkaniemi's underwhelming production of 27 points this season and only one point in the playoffs.
Initially, the contract was viewed as a risky move for the Hurricanes, and it hasn't paid off. With the potential savings from a buyout, it's understandable why the Hurricanes are considering this option.
