Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon is usually the hero for head coach Jared Bednar. Today, he is the internet's favorite punching bag.
The internet can be wildly entertaining, but also very cruel. MacKinnon found that out this week after an Instagram post had him trending for a very unfortunate reason.
A viral social media post showed a simple image of a player shooting at a wide open net from in close. The caption asked followers to tag a friend who would miss a wide-open net from close proximity.
The comment section immediately turned into a ruthless, unforgiving graveyard for the Canadian superstar.
Thousands of fans relentlessly flooded the replies with tags directing straight to MacKinnon. They made absolutely sure he could not avoid the digital embarrassment.
It all stems from the most agonizing sequence of the recent Olympic gold medal showdown between the bitter North American rivals.
With a yawning cage staring him down late in the contest, MacKinnon fanned on a glorious, tournament-defining scoring chance.
That single misfire shifted the entire momentum of the event. Team Canada watched their ultimate championship aspirations completely evaporate into thin air.
A Costly Olympic Nightmare
The United States quickly seized the opportunity. They rode that massive wave of relief all the way to the top of the Olympic podium.
That historic victory finally snapped an agonizing 46-year gold drought for the Americans. The legendary streak stretched all the way back to the 1980 Miracle on Ice.
Meanwhile, a devastated Canadian roster was forced to awkwardly skate away with a bitter silver medal draped around their necks.
Hockey fans clearly have short memories for regular season success. They hold a photographic recall for massive failures on the international stage.
The superstar center normally lights up the NHL with his explosive transition game and elite offensive output. He is a Stanley Cup champion with a massive contract.
Over his NHL career, MacKinnon has built an undeniable reputation as one of the most clutch performers in the entire sport.
None of those past accolades matter to the loud critics currently dominating the social media algorithms. The internet remains completely undefeated when mocking professional athletes.
He will simply have to absorb this brutal public roasting. The sting will linger until the puck drops on his next chance at international redemption, or until he buries the game winning goal for his 2nd career Stanley Cup.
