At the start of the season, Jakub Vrana, a prominent player for the Detroit Red Wings, joined the NHLPA's Player Assistance Program due to his struggle with substance abuse. Following the completion of the program, Vrana was sent to the American Hockey League to continue his rehabilitation journey for a few weeks before getting called up to play for the Red Wings.

However, despite his return, there seemed to be some underlying tension between Vrana and the team, which eventually led to his trade at the deadline. The Detroit Red Wings, in exchange for Dylan McLaughlin and a round 7 pick in the 2025 draft, traded Vrana to the St. Louis Blues, with the Red Wings retaining half of his salary.
Since joining the Blues, Vrana's performance has been remarkable. In just nine games, he has scored five goals and six points, and it appears that he is thriving in St. Louis. Vrana has also been vocal about how he was treated in Detroit, as he now feels free to express himself without reservation.
According to Vrana, he did not believe he was given a fair chance to prove himself to the team, especially upon his return from the NHLPA's program.
I came back and felt like a new person. It was totally different. It's just that it was a little frustrating to me. expected a little bit more trust and a little bit more chance to kind of put the pieces together again. That didn't work.

I still think I did the right thing (in seeking help). Some people didn't like that and they didn't accept it .. Now it's a new opportunity. I cannot be happier to join.
