With the Edmonton Oilers facing limited cap space and numerous offseason needs, re-signing Adam Henrique was a significant win. It's now clear that Henrique left money on the table to stay in Edmonton.
According to Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal, Henrique turned down a two-year offer from the Winnipeg Jets worth around $3.5 million per season. While the difference is only about $1 million, for a cap-strapped team like Edmonton, that savings is crucial.
"A contact of mine in Winnipeg who has knowledge of the conversations says that Adam Henrique turned down a 2-year, $3.5m contract from the Winnipeg Jets at free agency this summer. Instead, he opted for the Oilers on a 2-year, $3m deal to stay in Edmonton. While $500k may not seem like a lot in an $88m cap world, that is about two thirds that of a minimum salaried player." Leavins wrote
Henrique, who has been a consistent performer for the Anaheim Ducks over the past seven seasons, joined the Oilers at the trade deadline. He tallied 6 goals and 3 assists in 22 regular season games, and added 4 goals and 3 assists in 17 playoff games during the team's Stanley Cup final run.
