Brayden Schenn is officially a New York Islander, and head coach Patrick Roy finally has the battle-tested center his lineup desperately needed.
Waiving a no-trade clause is never a casual decision. For a 34-year-old veteran with a Stanley Cup ring and deep roots in the Midwest, packing up mid-season requires a massive leap of faith. It was a decision that he had always been reluctant to make, but the Islanders are an attractive situation.
The St. Louis chapter is officially closed. Schenn departs having logged over 500 games in a Blue Note sweater, leaving behind a legacy of hard-nosed, two-way hockey and crisp passing.
Leaving guaranteed comfort to join a grinding Metropolitan Division race is incredibly tough. But Long Island suddenly has a very different gravitational pull right now.
Rumors swirled for days about why the veteran ultimately approved the blockbuster deal. It turns out the primary magnet drawing him East was a highly touted teenager.
Matthew Schaefer is completely redefining the trajectory of this franchise. The dynamic young defenseman has immediately captured the attention of veterans across the entire league.
The Schaefer Effect
Schenn did not hold back when asked about the electric rookie on Thursday. He made it perfectly clear that Schaefer's presence was the absolute deciding factor in green-lighting the trade.
"That's no secret. He's world-class," Schenn explained to reporters with genuine excitement regarding his new teammate. "He's elite."
Elite skill on the blue line is rare, but character matters just as much in a tight locker room. Schenn had clearly done his homework on the kid before packing his bags.
"I think what guys say is how good of a person he is, how fun it is to be around him," the veteran forward noted.
A toxic superstar can fracture a dressing room extremely fast. A grounded one builds a sustainable winning culture that lasts for years.
"When superstars in the league are good guys that take care of his teammates, guys are only gonna want to be around him," Schenn continued.
Schenn firmly believes this rookie will completely overhaul the Islanders' reputation in free agency. He predicts a steady stream of top talent heading to UBS Arena.
Top-tier players will aggressively want to sign in New York in the near future, Schenn added, "just because of his talent and character."
With 940 career NHL games under his belt, Schenn knows exactly what a championship roster looks like. He clearly sees one brewing right now on Long Island.
