ony DeAngelo recently opened up about the physical altercation with Alexandar Georgiev that led to his departure from the New York Rangers in 2021.
The incident happened in January 2021 after the Rangers secured a 5-4 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Following the game, DeAngelo and Georgiev got into a heated exchange, which ultimately resulted in the Rangers placing DeAngelo on waivers.
During an interview on the "Morning Cuppa Hockey" podcast, DeAngelo shared his perspective on what transpired. He acknowledged that he was responsible for initiating the confrontation and described the sequence of events.
«Coming down the tunnel I yelled at Georgiev 'Make a bleepin save' If I didn't yell at Georgiev, Georgiev was going to come down and do anything,» DeAngelo said. «That's a fact, so obviously I started it. Obviously I wasn't thinking what was going to happen next was going to happen, that was a surprise to me. Georgiev was running out after the game, struggling in the game and he turns around and fires a headbutt at me
«I get a cut at the side of my face. I just hit him, got him with the stick on the goalie mask. It goes a little but into the locker room. Nothing really happens, nobody is going to let guys fight in there. Guys break it up and it ends."

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman was the one to inform DeAngelo that the Rangers had placed him on waivers rather than trading him, a move DeAngelo said he expected after the incident.
Currently, Tony DeAngelo is a free agent, having become the first player in NHL history to have his contract bought out twice. He has played in 197 NHL games, tallying 92 points, and has had stints with the Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, and Philadelphia Flyers.
