Shane Pinto faced a controversial 41-games suspension from the NHL last season, and now the young star has shared what led to it.
Last year was a tumultuous one for the Ottawa Senators, with Pinto's suspension being one of the biggest stories. It raised eyebrows, especially as the NHL promoted sportsbooks, making the league's actions seem somewhat contradictory.
However, Pinto didn't contest the suspension, and he recently explained why during an appearance on the "Empty Netters" podcast:
"I had my buddies - because I was in Canada - just place bets for me in America," he explained during a recent appearance on the "Empty Netters" podcast. "I wasn't a Canadian citizen so I couldn't really use a Canadian sportsbook. ... That's proxy betting, so that's obviously a big no-no. It was an illegal act so, obviously, it was a pretty big deal.
"So that's why we didn't want to fight (the suspension) and we just kinda accepted it."

This was the first time Pinto publicly admitted to the situation surrounding his suspension. He seems to have learned from the experience and is unlikely to be involved in betting again.
After serving his suspension, Pinto returned to play 41 games, scoring 9 goals and totaling 27 points, showcasing his potential at just 23 years old. With the betting scandal behind him, there are high hopes for his future in Ottawa.
