The Gaudreau family, from the Philadelphia area, has been at the center of attention after an intoxicated driver, Sean Higgins, caused the car accident that killed brothers Matthew and Johnny. Matthew had played in the NCAA and spent time in the New York Islanders system before becoming a coach. Johnny was a beloved NHL All-Star, especially among Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets fans.
While many teams and players have paid tribute to the brothers, today's gesture by their father, Guy, was especially touching. He joined the Flyers' practice, putting on a coach's outfit to help out.
«Obviously, it's so tragic what happened. It just breaks your heart,» Philadelphia defenseman Nick Seeler said. «To have Mr. Gaudreau out here and have him around the players - he's a coach himself. Just to have him around the guys and the coaching environment, hopefully there's some sort of healing in that.»
Travis Sanheim also shared a few words: «Any way that we can help him out (with) what's going on, I hope it was good for him, as well. He's done a lot for this area and the community.»
Guy was invited by the Flyers to join their non-playing group at their game against the Montreal Canadiens tonight. It's been one of the most moving moments in the hockey community in recent memory.
Having helped Matthew and Johnny with their skating and hockey skills growing up, Guy played a big role in their success. Seeing him back on the ice, in memory of his sons, is truly heartwarming.
