New report confirms Evgeni Malkin is leaving the NHL

A report on Monday suggests that the 2024-25 season might be Evgeni Malkin's last in the National Hockey League.
According to Mark Madden of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the long-time Pittsburgh Penguins forward may leave the team after the 2024-25 season. Madden discussed this on his radio show, "Madden Monday," while talking about Sidney Crosby's upcoming contract extension, expected to be signed on Wednesday. He revealed that Malkin plans to return to Russia, foregoing the final year of his contract.
"I've been told (Malkin) won't be back after this year � that he'll go to Russia and forgo the last year of his deal," Madden said. "How does that impact Sid? Does Sid know? I bet he does."
Before the 2023-24 season, Malkin told NHL.com's Wes Crosby that he aimed to play three more seasons in the NHL, through 2025-26, before becoming an unrestricted free agent. If Madden's source is correct, it will be interesting to see why Malkin would give up the final year of his contract, worth $6.1 million, to return to Russia and likely play in the KHL.
This upcoming season will be crucial for Malkin and the Penguins as they look to avoid missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third consecutive year, something the organization hasn't experienced since 2002-2006.
