Kris Letang, a key player for the Pittsburgh Penguins for the past 18 years, is reportedly seeking a trade.
Since the early 2000s, the Penguins have thrived with their star trio of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kristopher Letang. However, that era may be ending. Malkin is rumored to want out after this season, Crosby has not yet signed an extension, and now Letang has officially requested a trade to his hometown Montreal Canadiens.
According to Penguins reporter Mark Madden, Letang approached the team's front office with his trade request.
Kristopher Letang, who is entering the third year of his $36.6 million contract, has been a cornerstone of the Penguins' defense."
However, the Canadiens seem unwilling to take on Letang's $6.1 million annual salary for the next four years, especially after investing in younger players like Kaiden Guhle. As a result, discussions about the trade appear to be over.
"Letang remains with Pittsburgh for now, but it will be interesting to see if more trade talks with Montreal arise if the Penguins struggle in the 2024-25 season."
At 37 years old, Letang might finish his career with the Penguins. He has an impressive record of 166 goals and 742 points in 1,087 games. With the future of the Penguins' core players uncertain, it remains to be seen what will happen with Letang and the team.
