St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong and the rest of the management team had to deal with an unfortunate internal breach following a chaotic trade deadline.
The organization is reeling after details of a blockbuster Colton Parayko trade to the Buffalo Sabres surfaced prematurely.
Armstrong didn't mince words when addressing the media, expressing deep disappointment that sensitive organizational discussions became public knowledge.
The leak reportedly created an awkward environment as the Blues and Sabres had a formal deal in place involving prospect Radim Mrtka and a first-round pick.
However, the transaction collapsed when Parayko chose to exercise his no-trade clause to veto the move to Western New York.
Blues attempt to find 'mole' in organization unsuccessful
It is a rare move for a front office to admit to such a significant lapse in security and launch a forensic investigation.
Armstrong confirmed the team reviewed phone records, text messages, and emails of staff members to find the source.
Despite the exhaustive search, every member of the hockey operations department passed the internal test.
The 32-year-old defenseman, who leads the Blues with 141 blocked shots this season, remains in the fold despite the failed exit.
The failure to find a "mole" leaves a cloud of uncertainty over a locker room that is already struggling with a 23-29-9 record.
Parayko remains a cornerstone of the defense, but having his name linked to a rejected trade changes the team dynamic.
Buffalo has since pivoted to add size by acquiring Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn, but the Blues' internal trust remains fractured.
Trust is the currency of any successful NHL front office, and Armstrong knows he can't operate effectively with leaks.
When that trust is broken, it takes more than a few cleared phone logs to fix the cultural damage.
The Blues must now pivot back to the ice, but the sting of this betrayal will likely linger well into the offseason.
