The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that they have extended star winger William Nylander. With Nylander locked up long term things have shifted to focus on captain John Tavares.

Tavares Comments On Nylander Extension

After the extension was announced by the Toronto Maple Leafs and William Nylander practically every player was asked their thoughts on the deal. This included captain John Tavares who was not concerned that the deal was going to get done.

"I didn't have any doubts; it's just the beginning for him."- Tavares on Nylander's negotiations

Tavares has always been complimentary of Nylander and in the past said that Nylander was built to be a Toronto sports star. Now that William Nylander is around for the foreseeable future the questions turned to Tavares who is set to need a new contract after next season.

Tavares Unveils His Future After His Current Contract

The media was quick to ask John Tavares if he sees himself sticking around. His contract ends after next season and he will be 34 when it ends. With his age the questions have begun if he sees himself continuing and potentially ending his career in Toronto. When asked Tavares made his future intentions clear.

John Tavares is a year and a half away from free agency himself. The captain reiterates that he too wants to stay in Toronto.

If Tavares does want to stick around in Toronto he will likely have to take a significant pay cut. As the year goes on it will be interesting to see how much the noise increases on the Tavares front.
