Andrew Forbes Links Marc-Andre Fleury To The Toronto Maple Leafs
Adding to the speculation, Andrew Forbes of the Hockey Writers has revived trade rumors connecting Toronto to veteran goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. Forbes notes that last season, the Maple Leafs were linked to Fleury, and as the trade deadline approaches, there's a possibility they might revisit this option.
«During the 2022 NHL trade deadline, reports surfaced that the Maple Leafs and then-general manager Kyle Dubas had been in talks with the Chicago Blackhawks and Kyle Davidson on a trade that would land Fleury and forward Brandon Hagel for multiple first-round picks, Matthew Knies and Petr Mrazek.»
Forbes reminds fans of Fleury's near move to the Leafs in March 2022 when he was with the Chicago Blackhawks. The transaction didn't materialize, but Fleury expressed openness to joining Toronto at that time. Now with Fleury in Minnesota and no longer the starting goalie, the Maple Leafs could entice him with a better role and a chance at another Stanley Cup championship.
However, Forbes points out the challenge of acquiring Fleury, considering Wild GM Bill Guerin might seek a substantial return for the veteran goalie. The Maple Leafs must be cautious not to jeopardize their future in pursuit of Fleury.
