Major concerns emerged regarding Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews' head injury that occurred in the NHL playoffs against the Boston Bruins.
The Maple Leafs were eliminated in seven games by the Bruins, and luck didn't seem to be on their side during the series. William Nylander missed a few games due to migraines, Joseph Woll missed Game 7 because of a back injury, and Auston Matthews was limited to five games due to an illness and a head injury from a strange hit.
Matthews' head injury worried fans the most. At just 26 years old, this is the second time he's suffered a head injury in his career.
Sportsnet's Luke Fox highlighted the situation:
"How concerning is it that Auston Matthews has now sustained multiple head injuries in his career — one in his sophomore season and another after a 'weird hit' in Game 4 of the Bruins series?
Sidney Crosby is the posterboy for stuffing head injuries in the rearview and going on to thrive for years afterward. We'll take it as a positive that Matthews got cleared to play Game 7 and set up a goal, despite looking something less than 100 per cent."
It's hard to predict the long-term effects of head injuries, which fuels concerns about Matthews' situation. However, the example of Sidney Crosby, who had many head injuries in his career and continues to perform well, is encouraging for Leafs fans.
