Elliotte Friedman revealed today that the Toronto Maple Leafs might add DJ Smith to Craig Berube's coaching staff.

Smith is a familiar name to Leafs fans, having served as an assistant coach under Mike Babcock from 2015-16 to 2018-19. Babcock himself lasted just one year longer.

friedge mentioned DJ smith potentially joining berube's staff if he doesn't stay in LA this afternoon on sn590which uhhhwould definitely be a hire!

Bringing in DJ Smith could explain another move the Leafs appear to be making. Assistant coach Dean Chynoweth is not under contract for next season. Chynoweth has been with the Leafs since the 2021-22 season.

The Leafs made the playoffs three times while Smith was part of the coaching staff in the 2017, 2018, and 2019 seasons. Each time, the team lost in the first round. As a result, Leafs fans are not particularly thrilled to hear his name linked to the team again.

It would be...a weird welcome back.

The Leafs have many moves to make this offseason, both in their coaching staff and on the roster. Adding Smith back to the coaching staff could be just a small part of a wider series of changes. Stay tuned to the Leafs this summer, as it could be one of their most eventful offseasons in a long time.
