Insider Elliotte Friedman shared some fascinating news on his latest 32 Thoughts podcast regarding Toronto Maple Leafs star forward Mitch Marner and his situation.

Friedman believes the Toronto Maple Leafs are waiting for the right moment to avoid an emotional Mitch Marner trade, similar to the Nazem Kadri situation.
This offseason, Mitch Marner's future with the Maple Leafs is a key topic. Marner can sign a contract extension on July 1st as he enters the final year of his $10.903 million AAV contract.
General Manager Brad Treliving stated in his end-of-season press conference that he wants to improve the team and will consider all options. Marner's situation is a top priority.
Many teams would love to have Marner, as he is highly talented and still in his prime. However, insider Elliotte Friedman says the Leafs are not in a rush and might resolve this during the next season, similar to William Nylander's contract extension.
"Elliotte Friedman on the ongoing Mitch Marner situation:

«Don't be surprised if Marner's situation plays out over the next season in Toronto.»

The delicate negotiations between player and team aim for a win-win, with the Leafs seeking a beneficial trade or strategic use of cap space. Concerns include fan reactions if Marner remains unsigned and a trade based on emotions like the Kadri trade a few seasons ago, which the Leafs do not want to repeat. They fear Marner could thrive as a great player in a quieter market.

«If the contract demands on both sides are crazy, it could lead to a divorce. But on June 2nd, I'm not certain that Marner will be traded.»"
Brad Treliving wants to avoid past mistakes like the Kadri and Matthew Tkachuk trades.
The Leafs don't want another emotional trade like Kadri's. Kadri refused a trade to Calgary, leading to a deal involving Tyson Barrie, Alex Kerfoot, and a 6th-round draft pick. Kadri later had a breakout season in Colorado.
Marner has a no-movement clause and a high salary, adding pressure on Treliving to avoid repeating the Kadri trade or the Huberdeau-Tkachuk trade, which is considered one of the worst in recent years.
Do you think the Maple Leafs would make a mistake by waiting until after the summer to trade Mitch Marner?
