Leafs closing in on a contract extension for veteran forward John Tavares

John Tavares has made it clear that he wants to stay with the Toronto Maple Leafs & NHL insider Pierre LeBrun now suggests that a contract extension could be closer than expected.
This summer the Leafs made a big change by naming Auston Matthews as the new team captain replacing Tavares. While many were surprised by the decision, it's starting to feel like Matthews' team. With Tavares' contract ending soon and his captaincy gone, many are wondering what's next for him.
According to LeBrun, Tavares is likely to remain a Maple Leaf but at a reduced salary.

Tavares is an important part of the team and the Toronto community. Losing him would be a major blow to the Leafs and their fans. While he won't be signing for the league minimum, he is expected to take a pay cut from his current $11 million salary.
