When the Leafs selected Danford 31st overall in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, some viewed it as a surprise move, especially after trading down. However, the team clearly saw something special in the Madoc, Ontario native. Known for his strong defensive instincts and calmness under pressure, Danford is expected to be a key piece for the Leafs in the future.
Unfortunately, this offseason didn't go as planned for Danford. He suffered a concussion during training camp, the result of a hit from invitee Marshall Finnie, and has been sidelined ever since. On Monday, the team announced his reassignment to Oshawa.
While Danford was not expected to make the Leafs' roster this season, a strong camp performance might have earned him a spot with the Marlies if not for the injury. Sending him back to the OHL allows him to regain his conditioning and improve his skating. However, this doesn't mean the door is closed for Danford. The Leafs could recall him later in the season, particularly for a potential playoff run with the Marlies or even as a depth option for the Leafs.
Danford may not be an offensive powerhouse, but his 32 assists last season for the Generals demonstrate his ability to contribute and create opportunities for his teammates. His defensive play and ability to read the game are already at a high level.
Being drafted by the Maple Leafs was also a special moment for Danford, as they were his childhood team. Reflecting on the draft, he shared how overwhelming the experience was:
While it may be a few years before we see Danford in a Leafs jersey, fans are hopeful for his continued growth in Oshawa this season. If he can build on last year's success, his path to the NHL might be shorter than expected.
