At 41 years old, many thought Mark Giordano might retire, especially after a tough 2023/24 season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he had just 9 points in 46 games. However, Giordano wants to continue playing in the NHL.

His agent has been in talks with three Canadian teams about a potential deal for the upcoming season: the Edmonton Oilers, the Maple Leafs, and his former team, the Calgary Flames. Unfortunately for Giordano, the Flames, where he spent 15 years and served as captain, are not interested. Former teammate and Flames GM Craig Conroy reportedly did not see Giordano as a fit for the team.
"It wasn't something that we really pushed hard and it didn't seem like Conroy had much interest in it," Winter said. "I think he missed the mark, I would tell him that. ... What better player do you know than Gio to be a mentor to a bunch of young kids about what it takes to prepare and be an elite NHL player?"

Despite this setback, both the Oilers and the Maple Leafs are strong contenders for the Stanley Cup in the 2024/25 season. Giordano, who has over 1,100 games of experience, could be a valuable depth player for either team.
"He's looking to win. Even Gio doesn't think he has 10 years left, so you want to try and win," Winter said.
As he seeks a chance to win before retiring, Giordano is likely open to a more affordable contract. We'll be watching to see how this develops.
