The Toronto Maple Leafs are battling elimination one more time tonight as they play game seven against the Boston Bruins. However, they will be forced to rely on backup netminder Ilya Samsonov as Joseph Woll is apparently injured.
Rumors about who the starting goaltender would be emerged earlier today when Joseph Woll was not on the first bus to arrive at TD Garden with the rest of the starters. Now NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has confirmed that Ilya Samsonov will in fact, be in net for the Leafs tonight.
Maple Leafs reporter Luke Fox noted that Woll suffered an injury at some point during game six. He tried to go this morning at morning skate, but clearly he is not well enough to start the game. Given how he played in games 5 and 6, he would surely be starting game 7 if he was healthy.
NHL analyst and former enforcer Paul Bissonnette believes Woll hurt himself on the last play of the game, when he dived across the crease, trying to stop a Morgan Geekie shot that snuck across the goal line with .1 seconds left.
