According to a recent development, the Vegas Golden Knights appear to be moving into the territory once held by the Arizona Coyotes.
It's been a tough summer for Coyotes fans. The team moved to Utah, and hopes for an NHL team returning to Arizona faded when Alex Meruelo, the last potential buyer, withdrew his interest in acquiring another team.
With the Coyotes gone and unlikely to return soon, the Vegas Golden Knights are stepping in to attract Arizona's hockey fans.
Vegas, about a five-hour drive from Tempe, has been building a strong fanbase since joining the NHL in 2017, including winning the Stanley Cup in 2023. Now, they're expanding their reach into Arizona. In addition to hosting watch parties and hockey clinics across the state, the Golden Knights have made their games available on TV in Phoenix and Tucson.
Golden Knights President and CEO Kerry Bubolz said.
«We are thrilled to expand the Realm of fans who can watch our local broadcast and appreciate our partners at Scripps Sports for helping make this a reality,» said Vegas Golden Knights President and CEO Kerry Bubolz. «Having our games available for free over the air, or through KnightTime+, is a win for hockey fans in Arizona.»
Scripps Sports President Brian Lawlor added.
«As the intense fandom around hockey grows, we know how important it is for the Vegas Golden Knights to reach their expanding fanbase on every device and platform,» said Scripps Sports President Brian Lawlor. «These new Scripps Sports-produced local broadcasts, combined with Knight Time+, will make sure that fans in the Phoenix and Tucson markets never have to miss a game.»
With the NHL unlikely to return to Arizona anytime soon, many former Coyotes fans may begin supporting the Golden Knights.
