Nathan MacKinnon and Colorado's head coach got a reminder fast that this game was not going to stay quiet.

The clip making the rounds did not show a fight, but it showed plenty of bite. MacKinnon and Jamie Benn got tied up, leaned into each other, and clearly had words.
That is why the moment travelled. It was not a staged heavyweight showdown or some gloves-off spectacle. It was two star veterans getting chippy in the middle of the action.
And that kind of exchange always means something. When MacKinnon is involved, the temperature usually rises because he plays with edge, pace, and very little patience for extra traffic.
Benn brings that same kind of tension from the other side. He has spent years dragging games into the mud when he thinks Dallas needs a harder push or a sharper response.
So even without punches, the scene had weight. Benn had a hand on MacKinnon, MacKinnon stayed engaged, and neither guy looked interested in backing out of the conversation.
The eye test matters here. This was not a harmless bump and a skate away. It looked personal enough to spark a reaction, but controlled enough that neither side crossed into a full fight.

The message was clear even without a fight

A scrum like that can wake up a game, get a crowd louder, and tell both teams the clean skill portion of the night may be over.
MacKinnon usually does his best damage with speed through the middle and quick attacks off the rush. When the game turns more physical, every defender starts looking for ways to slow him down before he gets moving.
Benn knows that better than most. His whole style is built around making skilled players uncomfortable, forcing extra contact, and making sure every puck touch comes with some annoyance attached.
So this little exchange fit the script. Benn was being Benn, and MacKinnon was not about to just absorb it and move on like it never happened.
That does not mean it needed to become a fight. Sometimes the better signal is the one that stops just short of that line, because it leaves the game simmering instead of blowing it up all at once.
Nathan MacKinnon and Jamie Benn did not drop the gloves, but they absolutely changed the mood. In a game like this, a few hard words and one nasty little tie-up can do plenty of damage on their own.
