Most would agree that Steve Yzerman is one of the best National Hockey League General Managers. He carefully calculates each move to benefit his team and players.
However, his recent decision to demote a player back to the AHL after just one NHL game has left many confused.
Jakub Vrana had been away from the game for a significant amount of time due to entering the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program for substance abuse. When he completed the program, he was sent to the AHL. Initially struggling and becoming a healthy scratch at times, he recently showed promise with a goal-scoring streak that earned him a call-up to the NHL.
On Vrana: My understanding is this move isn't to accrue additional cap space but to reduce the number of days on the roster before waivers might be required again. https://t.co/msXO7nMcWd— Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) February 23, 2023
Vrana finally played his first NHL game since entering the program on Tuesday, registering two shots on goal in 11:31 of game time. Nonetheless, Yzerman has decided to send him back down to the AHL to play in Grand Rapids.
