However, during the third period of the game, a significant event took place that captured the attention of the audience. As the Washington Capitals were attempting to break out of their zone, one of their players, Evgeny Kuznetsov, received a pass. At this moment, Wild's defenseman Matt Dumba caught Kuznetsov off-guard and delivered a powerful check that appeared to target his head. The hit was considered dangerous and resulted in Kuznetsov leaving the game:

After the hit, Oshie dropped the gloves with Dumba in defence of his teammate, and received the only penalty on the play:
