The NHL world was in shock over the recent, tragic events in England surrounding Adam Johnson's death, and now, it appears hockey in the UK are making major steps towards player safety.
After the devastating events over the weekend, it has been reported that the English Ice Hockey Association that oversees hockey in the UK will be making neck guards mandatory.
This will come into effect in 2024, and after the tragic event, it's certainly the right move, and one that could catch on around the world, as the EIHA revealed in a statement.
As in all sports, the safety of our players must take precedence above all else," the statement read. "We are firmly committed to our obligation to exhaust every possible means to ensure that a tragic incident of this nature never befalls our sport again.
Given how dangerous hockey can be with skates, ice and the physicality of players, extra steps to protection will never be a bad thing, especially for a league reeling after these events.
Whether it catches on in North America is another story entirely, but for junior and minor leagues, it's a move that certainly makes plenty of sense, and it wouldn't be surprising if this move was followed by many leagues around the world.
