The hockey community is mourning the loss of Gilles Leger, a former Canadian University and WHA coach, who has passed away at the age of 83.
Leger's career began at St. Francis Xavier University, where he served as head coach from 1967 to 1972. He then moved on to the World Hockey Association, starting as an assistant coach with the Ottawa Nationals and later the Toronto Toros. In 1976, Leger became the general manager of the Birmingham Bulls, a position he held until 1979.
Leger's influence extended beyond coaching. He took on various front office roles, including director of player development for the Quebec Nordiques from 1979 to 1983. He also served as president of the Fredericton Express and Halifax Citadels in the AHL, as well as the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL. Later in his career, Leger worked as a scout for the Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers in the NHL.
Losing someone like Leger, who had such a profound impact on the sport, is a significant loss. His legacy will be remembered by the many people, teams, and organizations he influenced throughout his life.
