Brady Tkachuk put Travis Green in a brutal spot with one of the strangest minors you will ever see.

The clip making the rounds showed Tkachuk getting a 2-minute slashing minor while sitting on the bench. That alone is enough to light up a fan base.
What made it worse was the detail attached to it. The post said Tkachuk caught Beck Malenstyn in the face with his stick as the play moved past the Ottawa bench.
That is where this stops being a normal penalty story. A bad trip or a lazy hook happens in the flow of a shift. This one came from the bench, which makes it look reckless and completely avoidable.
And that is why the backlash comes fast. When your captain hands the other team a power play without even being in the play, the bench looks sloppy and the coach wears it too.
Green will get asked about discipline because that is part of the job. A team can survive an aggressive penalty. It is much harder to explain one that comes from a player who is not even on the ice.
Tkachuk is too important for this kind of mistake to get shrugged off. He is Ottawa's captain, and when he loses control of a moment like that, it changes the tone around the whole bench.
Here is the clip :

This is the kind of penalty coaches hate

The eye test on the sequence is what makes it so ugly. Malenstyn comes past the bench, there is traffic near the boards, and Tkachuk's stick comes up from a seated position into a spot where nothing good can happen.
That is not edgy hockey. That is just handing away a problem your team did not need.
It also puts Green in a bad spot publicly. If he goes soft on it, it looks like the captain gets different treatment. If he goes hard on it, then one strange moment becomes a larger story around discipline and control.
Either way, the coach ends up answering for something that never should have reached him. That is why fans get so heated over these plays. They feel self-inflicted before the penalty kill even starts.
Tkachuk usually brings energy that drags Ottawa into the fight. But this was the wrong kind of spark, and there is no dressing that up when the penalty comes from the bench.
That is why this clip travelled so quickly. It was weird, it was needless, and it made a captain look careless in a moment where the Senators needed him to stay sharp.
