Rasmus Dahlin fought in a Buffalo Sabres vs Tampa Bay Lightning grinder, and the Atlantic Division race suddenly felt personal.

This wasn't «rivalry night» marketing. This was two teams tied at 82 points playing like the season was on the line.
Tampa Bay came in 39-18-4. Buffalo answered at 38-19-6, and the building treated every whistle like a dare.
The wild part is the hockey was real, too. Nikita Kucherov scored his 33rd and is sitting on 69 assists, because of course he is.
Buffalo's power play bit back through Josh Doan's 20th, plus Jason Zucker's 18th and Alex Tuch's 26th and 27th.
Then the gloves started hitting the ice like loose pucks.
At the end of the first period, Corey Perry and Beck Malenstyn went at it with six seconds left.
Two seconds later, Erik Cernak and Michael Kesselring followed them, which is the kind of sequence that makes refs stare into the middle distance.

Rasmus Dahlin and Buffalo Sabres set the tone

Sabres fans have been waiting years for this kind of «we're not backing up» edge, and you could feel the crowd lean forward every time bodies piled up.
Midway through the second, Scott Sabourin and Sam Carrick added another fight, just to keep the temperature boiling.
And then Dahlin himself jumped in at 4:36 of the second, fighting Darren Raddysh in the middle of a sequence that also included extra minor chaos.
That's four separate fights in one night, and the penalty minutes ballooned to 53 for Tampa Bay and 45 for Buffalo.
Tactically, it looked like Buffalo wanted the Lightning's skill to play through contact all night. The Sabres hunted the walls, crashed the crease, and dared Tampa to answer every shift.
The danger is obvious, too. When you turn a game into whistles and emotion, one bad penalty can flip the whole night on the man advantage.
Still, this felt like a statement game more than a scoreboard game. If these two see each other again when it really counts, nobody's expecting a quiet series.
