Many in the hockey community are urging the NHL to rename the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in honor of Johnny Gaudreau following the tragic deaths of him and his brother, Matthew.
As fans and the community reflect on ways to honor the Gaudreaus, an idea has gained traction on social media. David Alter suggested that the NHL should rename the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy after Johnny Gaudreau.
While such proposals are often not seriously considered, this one could be different. The tragedy has deeply affected hockey fans, and many are eager to see a meaningful tribute.
The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, once highly regarded, has lost some of its prestige, with media members often voting based primarily on penalty minutes. Renaming it after Gaudreau, who won the trophy in 2017 while leading the Calgary Flames in points and recording only two minor penalties, would not only honor him but also restore significance to the award.
Calling it the Johnny Gaudreau Trophy would be a fitting way to commemorate his legacy in the NHL.
