Sam Bennett put Paul Maurice and the Panthers back under the spotlight Sunday after a nasty Florida-Pittsburgh sequence turned ugly.

This wasn't just another post-whistle scrum in a lost weekend for Florida. It felt like the kind of play that lands on the NHL's Player Safety desk the second the final horn sounds.
The clip making the rounds showed Parker Wotherspoon throwing the first cheap shot at Matthew Tkachuk.
Bennett stepped in right away and answered with a hard right that sent the sequence off the rails.
That's where the heat shifts. Wotherspoon started it, but Bennett made sure the moment had a second punch, and that's usually where the league starts asking harder questions.
Florida didn't need more noise.
Tension was baked into this one before puck drop.
Pittsburgh had already pushed Florida around in the first meeting, and the rematch turned into another afternoon where discipline slipped fast.
The gloves came off in a flash, and Bennett's right hand landed clean after Tkachuk absorbed the first shot.

Florida's edge crossed the line

That's the problem for Maurice now. The Panthers live on edge, and that edge is part of what made them hard to play against over the last 2 seasons.
But there's a line between pushback and a clip the league has to study.
Bennett is one of the players who sets Florida's emotional temperature. When he jumps into something like this, it doesn't stay isolated.
It becomes a bench issue, a reputation issue, and maybe a discipline issue.
Pittsburgh had its own role in the mess, and Wotherspoon won't skate away clean in the court of public opinion.
Still, Bennett is the bigger name, the bigger target, and the one most fans will expect the league to examine first.
That matters because Florida is already running thin on margin.
The Panthers were 16-21-0 on the road entering this game, and every extra distraction keeps piling onto a club that has been chasing stability for weeks.
The bigger story isn't just who threw what. It's that Florida looked rattled again, and Bennett turned a dirty sequence into one more spotlight moment the Panthers didn't need.
If Player Safety takes a hard look, nobody in Sunrise should be stunned. This was the exact kind of chaos that gets remembered long after the score fades.
