Dillon Dube is officially back. The forward earned a minor-league deal, hoping to eventually catch the eye of Blues head coach Jim Montgomery.
The 27-year-old just parlayed a professional tryout into a standard AHL contract with the Springfield Thunderbirds. It marks a quiet return for a player who was an everyday regular in the Calgary Flames lineup not long ago.
Flames fans surely remember his best season in Alberta. During the 2022-23 campaign, he posted 18 goals and 45 points while playing all 82 games.
But Dube spent the entire 2024-25 season overseas. He suited up for Minsk Dynamo in the KHL, registering 11 points across 42 games in a heavily structured hockey environment.
That Russian stint directly followed his indefinite leave from the Flames in early 2024.
He was one of several players charged in connection with the 2018 Hockey Canada investigation. He was ultimately found not guilty in July of 2025.
Earning His Keep in the AHL
Now, the focus shifts entirely to his on-ice production and daily habits. And he is certainly making noise in Springfield right now.
Through 28 games on his initial PTO, Dube racked up 10 goals and 10 assists. A 20-point run in under 30 games proves he still possesses the crisp passing and raw speed that originally made him a second-round pick.
With 325 career NHL games and 127 points on his resume, the professional experience is undeniably there. Earning a permanent roster spot in the American League is no easy feat for a veteran trying to rebuild his stock.
AHL teams usually prioritize developing their young prospects over giving heavy ice time to older reclamation projects.
The Thunderbirds desperately need that kind of veteran scoring punch to help drive their transition game on a nightly basis. His early offensive output forced management to put a real contract on the table.
An NHL call-up to the big club in St. Louis remains a massive long shot at this stage of the season.
Converting a minor-league tryout into a guaranteed deal is simply the first step in salvaging his professional career in North America.
