The exact amount of cash that Canadian athletes, as well as those from other countries, receive when they win a medal at the Olympics has been revealed.

Sarah-Florence Benjamin, a journalist from the French newspaper "Journal de Montreal," shared details on how much money athletes earn for winning medals at the Olympics, which are currently being held in Paris, France.
"Olympic medals don't hold the same value for all athletes. Since no cash prize is associated with the medals, it's the countries that decide to reward—or not—their athletes. They also determine the size of the prize."

- Sarah-Florence Benjamin

The rewards for winning a medal vary significantly by country, as some are more willing to invest in their athletes than others. Canadian athletes, unfortunately, are not as well-rewarded as athletes from many other countries, sparking criticism that the Government of Canada should do more to support its athletes.
Here are the cash rewards for athletes from various countries:
Canada:
Gold medal: $20,000 CAD
Silver medal: $15,000 CAD
Bronze medal: $10,000 CAD
France:
Gold medal: $119,837 CAD
Silver medal: $59,918 CAD
Bronze medal: $29,959 CAD
United States:
Gold medal: $51,667 CAD
Silver medal: $31,000 CAD
Bronze medal: $20,667 CAD
Hong Kong:
Gold medal: $1,060,858 CAD
Silver medal: $530,429 CAD
Bronze medal: $265,215 CAD
4th place: $132,607 CAD
5th place: $66,304 CAD
Singapore:
Gold medal: $1,028,195 CAD
Silver medal: $514,098 CAD
Bronze medal: $257,049 CAD
United Kingdom, Sweden, and Norway:
These countries offer no cash prize to their medallists.
Kazakhstan:
Gold medal: $13,110 CAD and a three-room apartment
Silver medal: $8,740 CAD and a two-room apartment
Bronze medal: $4,370 CAD and a one-room apartment
Morocco:
Rewards athletes down to the 25th position. Those finishing 25th receive $6,979 CAD, and those in 8th place get $30,000 CAD.
Italy:
Gold medal: $270,000 CAD
In the United States, a gold medal earns an athlete $37,500 USD, which is significantly lower than the $737,000 USD offered by Singapore and the $716,000 USD offered by Taiwan.
Wow just $37,500 (all figures USD) as a monetary award to win a gold medal for the U.S. in the Olympics compared to Singapore where you earn $737,000 to win a gold medal or Taiwan at $716,000.

U.S needs to figure out a way to increase the monetary award for a gold medal.

Many athletes from other countries receive well over $100,000 in bonuses for winning medals, while the maximum a Canadian athlete gets is only $20,000. Canadian athletes deserve better treatment.
