Former Humboldt Broncos goaltender Jacob Wassermann made his Paralympic debut in Para rowing this past weekend in Paris, France.
Wassermann, a survivor of the tragic 2018 bus crash that claimed the lives of many of his teammates and staff, took up Para rowing less than two years ago. Initially aiming for the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles, he surprised many by qualifying for this summer's games at the World Championships.
In his debut, Wassermann competed in the B final of the 2000M race at Vaires-sur-Marne Stadium, finishing fourth with a time of 11 minutes 58.90 seconds.
Wassermann's journey is a powerful example of overcoming adversity. Despite the challenges he's faced, he has worked tirelessly towards his goal of competing in the Paralympics.
Reflecting on his journey, Wassermann said: "This is my second summer on the water only. It's been a quick process and not something that we expected," Wassermann said after Tuesday's training session. "Six months ago, even when I was in Rio and got the qualification [at the Americas Continental Qualification Regatta] - we went to Rio just to get more experience. "It's been a whirlwind, but it's been a lot of fun."
Now that his Paralympic debut is behind him, all eyes will be on Los Angeles in 2028, where Wassermann is expected to represent Canada once again. Though he wasn't expected to make it to Paris, he'll be more than ready for the next games.
