Former NHL defenseman tragically passes away at the young age of 52
Former Senators defenseman Dmitri Filimonov has sadly passed away at the age of 52.
Filimonov was initially drafted by the old Winnipeg Jets in the 1991 entry draft but was later traded to the Senators in a minor deal. This trade gave him his first and only opportunity to play in the NHL.
Former Senators defenseman Dimitri Filimonov has passed away unexpectedly at the age of 52.
Unfortunately, Filimonov did not quite make it in the NHL, spending the next two seasons split between the AHL and the IHL. After his brief stint in North America, he returned to Russia to play in the pro league there, before the KHL was established.
Those of you who guessed Dmitri Filimonov are correct. He was Alexei Yashin's teammate for 3 straight seasons – the first two with Moscow Dynamo and then they came to Ottawa together as NHL rookies in 93-94. Filimonov scored one career NHL goal and soon returned to Russia.
Footage of Filimonov's only career NHL goal has survived. It came against the LA Kings on December 13, 1993.

Filimonov appeared in 30 career NHL games, all in the 1993-94 season with the Ottawa Senators. In those games, he compiled 5 points, including his one goal. He had a -10 rating, 18 penalty minutes, and 15 shots on goal.
