Luke Mittelstadt now enters the Canadiens pipeline as head coach Martin St. Louis sees the organization lock in the young defenseman with a two-year entry-level contract starting in 2026-27.

Montreal confirmed the agreement Friday, adding another NCAA defenseman to a prospect pool that keeps getting deeper on the blue line. The deal will run through the 2027-28 season.
Mittelstadt was originally selected in the 7th round, 197th overall, at the 2023 NHL Draft. Late picks rarely come with guarantees, but the development path here has been steady.
The Eden Prairie, Minnesota native just finished another season with the University of Minnesota, appearing in 36 games while producing 21 points from the back end.
That level of offensive output from a defenseman fits the profile Montreal has targeted in recent drafts. Puck movement, skating, and supporting the transition game remain key traits.
At 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds, Mittelstadt relies more on mobility and positioning than raw strength. His first pass and ability to escape pressure stand out in his defensive zone play.

Canadiens keep adding to blue line depth

Martin St. Louis already works with one of the youngest defensive groups in the league, and the organization continues to reinforce that pipeline year after year.
During his college career, Mittelstadt produced consistently. He reached the 20-point mark twice while handling regular minutes in the Big Ten.
His 2023-24 season ended with 20 points in 38 games. The following year he posted 18 points in 40 games, another sign of stable production from the blue line.

Internationally, Mittelstadt also represented the United States at the 2023 World Junior Championship. He recorded 3 points in 7 games during that tournament.
Montreal does not need to rush the process. The Canadiens can allow him to continue refining his game before transitioning fully into professional hockey.
When that moment comes, the real evaluation begins. The question will be whether he settles into a puck-moving third-pair role or pushes for more responsibility.
For now, Montreal simply adds another defenseman to its growing prospect pool. For a seventh-round selection, reaching this stage already marks an encouraging step.
