In a new development, the reporter who broke the Johnny Gaudreau tragedy was fired from his job.
The first report concerning
Johnny Gaudreau and
Matthew Gaudreau's passing emerged during the night, even before the NHL and the Columbus Blue Jackets made the announcement.
Read a part of the NHL's statement here:
"The National Hockey League family is shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew. While Johnny's infectious spirit for the game and show-stopping skills on the ice earned him the nickname 'Johnny Hockey,' he was more than just a dazzling hockey player; he was a doting father and beloved husband, son, brother, and teammate who endeared himself to every person fortunate enough to have crossed his path." [...]
Before this information was released, there was a lot of speculation going around about the tragedy because a reporter decided to break the news before any official details were released to the public.
One of the most important things in journalism is the importance of having credible sources, especially when it's about news like this.
Tony Androckitis wrote on X:
"A tip to aspiring sports journalists:
Some things just aren't worth being 'first' to report.
When it comes to the tragic death of an athlete, & to a lesser degree retirement from the game, just let the player/team/family release a statement & be the source to share that news.
You can have your story written and ready to release as soon as it becomes official.
There's literally nothing to gain from making that info public before it's appropriate."
A few hours later, the reporter was fired from his job because of all the negative backlash this brought upon the website.
Unfortunately, it's not over yet, as he continues to receive hate messages, even death threats on social media.
Some fans always go too far. Even if what he did is terrible journalism, he doesn't deserve to get death threats online from strangers.
