Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is rolling while Lindy Ruff now has a real decision to make in the Buffalo Sabres crease.
This is no longer a simple depth chart. It's a strategic call heading into the playoffs.
Around the league, the Sabres are being talked about as a team that might break the usual goalie script.
Jason Gregor highlighted it Monday. The idea is gaining traction that Buffalo doesn't need to lock into one starter.
Luukkonen has been steady, posting a 2.54 GAA. He's giving them controlled nights and clean structure in front.
Right behind him, Alex Lyon sits at a .912 save percentage. That's not a backup profile, that's a second option you trust.
Ruff has a real decision to make
Buffalo is sitting on 95 points through 71 games. This isn't a fringe team trying to sneak in.
They've built this with consistency, and the crease has been part of that equation all year.
Most playoff teams shorten the rotation. One goalie, clear net, long leash.
But the Sabres don't have to follow that model.
Luukkonen can start Game 1. If his play dips even slightly, Ruff doesn't need to hesitate.
Lyon gives them a different look. Different reads, different pace, different puck tracking.
That forces opponents to adjust on the fly. Pre-scouting becomes less reliable.
There's also internal push. When both goalies know the net is earned, the level stays high.
The downside is rhythm. Too much switching can break timing and confidence.
Still, Buffalo's position gives them room to think bigger. They're not chasing, they're preparing.
If Ruff commits to the tandem, it won't be reactionary. It'll be intentional.
And if it clicks, the Sabres become a tougher playoff read than most teams in their bracket.
