Tony DeAngelo didn't hold back when expressing his frustration about signing with SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL. He made it clear he wasn't happy with how things turned out.

Yesterday, it was announced that the veteran defenseman agreed to a one-year deal with the Russian team, marking a significant shift in his career.
DeAngelo exits the NHL after a rough year with the Carolina Hurricanes, where he recorded just three goals and 11 points in 31 games. This performance was a sharp drop from his standout seasons in 2020 and 2021, when he put up 51 and 53 points, respectively. Despite his offensive talent, DeAngelo has consistently struggled to fit in with teammates, preventing him from securing a stable spot in the NHL.
DeAngelo says he "considered every option", including signing a PTO contract in the NHL: "Any option was on the table, but as I said, the best option for me was this one."

DeAngelo shared his thoughts on the situation, expressing disappointment over how things unfolded with NHL teams. He explained that while he explored all options, including a possible PTO (Professional Tryout Offer) in the NHL, the best opportunity for him was in the KHL.
"I waited through most of the summer," DeAngelo said in a one-on-one interview with RG.org. "It took a bit long. It was back and forth. With a bunch of different things, the negotiation process wasn't where we wanted to go. I had a great opportunity to come here and play in a great League with great players. It was the best situation for myself at this time."

Reports suggest DeAngelo's KHL deal includes a modest base salary with performance-based incentives. Even in Russia, teams seem hesitant to fully invest in the controversial defenseman.
As for a return to the NHL, it remains uncertain. DeAngelo has the skill to make a comeback, but it will likely depend on whether he can demonstrate maturity on and off the ice, and if an NHL team is willing to give him another chance.
