Controversial defenseman Tony DeAngelo has signed a one-year contract with SKA St. Petersburg in Russia's KHL after failing to secure a deal with an NHL team.

Despite initially denying reports about playing in the KHL, DeAngelo will now play outside of the NHL for the first time since 2017, when he was in the AHL. He's expected to earn around $1 million USD, making him one of the top-paid players in the KHL.
DeAngelo, who recently spoke about his infamous fight with former New York Rangers teammate Alex Georgiev, had previously stated that his focus was still on the NHL. However, with NHL training camps underway and no teams offering him a contract or even a tryout, the move to Russia seems to be his next step.
For SKA St. Petersburg, the signing makes sense. The team recently added Evgeny Kuznetsov to a roster already packed with top Russian talent not playing in North America.
