As the summer progresses, several veteran NHL free agents including former first-round picks and an experienced goalie are still available.

Most NHL teams have a clear idea of their potential rosters for opening night. However, several veteran free agents are still unsigned and could bring valuable skills or leadership to a team. Here's a look at some of these players:
James van Riemsdyk, Left Wing, 35
Van Riemsdyk, the 2nd overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, played his 1000th career game during the 2023-2024 season with the Boston Bruins. While his scoring has declined, with only 12 and 11 goals in the last two seasons, he could still be a useful addition in a limited 3rd or 4th line role.
Kevin Shattenkirk, Defence, 35
Shattenkirk, also a first-round pick in 2007, played alongside van Riemsdyk with the Bruins last season. He's a reliable puck-moving defenseman who can add some grit to the lineup, though his stamina may be a concern.
Max Pacioretty, Left Wing, 35
Pacioretty, another 2007 first-round pick, has struggled with injuries throughout his career. Despite this, he's scored over 300 goals and nearly 700 points in 16 seasons, making him a potentially valuable asset if he can stay healthy.
Tyson Barrie, Defence, 33
Barrie was one of the NHL's top defensemen from 2014 to 2019, hitting the 50-point mark three times with the Colorado Avalanche. Although he had a disappointing stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he rebounded with the Edmonton Oilers and was a key piece in the Mattias Ekholm trade to Nashville. Last season, he was a healthy scratch several times, but his experience and right-handed shot could be valuable for any team.
Antti Raanta, Goalie, 35
Raanta spent the last three seasons as a backup goaltender for the Carolina Hurricanes, building a reputation as a reliable option. Although his performance dipped last season with a .872 save percentage, his career numbers (.915 save percentage and 2.48 goals-against average) are still impressive. He could be a solid veteran presence as a spot starter.
These players might not be in their prime, but their experience and specific skills could still make them valuable additions to a team looking for depth and leadership.
