The Chicoutimi Saguenéens organization and their fanbase are grappling with a heartbreaking tragedy following a fatal emergency in the stands.
A dedicated season ticket holder suffered a severe cardiac episode at Centre Georges-Vézina on Thursday night. She tragically passed away late Friday afternoon, leaving the local hockey community completely devastated.
The medical emergency occurred during a QMJHL matchup between Chicoutimi and the Gatineau Olympiques. An off-duty nurse instantly rushed to help in Section 5 before arena responders arrived.
First responders performed CPR for several grueling minutes right there in the seats before rushing her to a local hospital.
The loss of life is heartbreaking enough. But the subsequent optics inside the arena have sparked intense criticism from the hockey world.
The game was never paused. While medical staff fought desperately to save a woman's life, the action on the ice continued at full speed.
A Controversial Decision
A goal was actually scored as the emergency team worked frantically just a few sections away from the glass. Fans in the building were entirely stunned by the lack of a stoppage from the officials.
Spectators near the incident told Noovo Info that absolutely nobody in the surrounding areas stood up to celebrate the goal. It was a surreal and uncomfortable atmosphere for everyone in attendance.
This brings back fresh, painful memories of a similar tragedy that hit the Quebec hockey scene earlier this year.
Back in January, a devoted Laval Rocket fan named Michel Pelletier suffered a fatal medical emergency in the stands at Place Bell. But there was a massive difference in how that situation was managed.
During that AHL game against the Manitoba Moose, officials quickly recognized the severity of the moment. They blew the whistle and effectively ended the contest with just over a minute left in the third period.
The Saguenéens organization quickly released a statement offering their deepest condolences to the family of the long-time ticket holder.
But the failure to halt the game exposes a glaring lack of situational awareness inside the building. The QMJHL must establish rigid protocols for major medical emergencies in the stands.
Human life must always supersede a hockey game. The buzzer should have sounded immediately.
