The hockey world is mourning Danica Hills and Kayla Peacock today. Head coach Dave Miller and the U18 Jasper Bearcats lost two incredible young athletes.

The devastating highway crash happened exactly 10 kilometers east of Jasper. It claimed the lives of both teenagers as they were heading home from a routine team practice on Monday evening.
This is an unimaginable heartbreak for a deeply passionate community. The tragic collision involved their personal pickup and a commercial semi-truck at roughly 7:15 p.m.
Hills was just 18 years of age. She was a highly dedicated student who already had her sights firmly set on an engineering degree at the University of Alberta.
Peacock was 17 and behind the wheel that terrible night. She was the reigning Rimbey Rodeo Queen and brought that same fierce, competitive edge right to the blue line.
These two were inseparable best friends who anchored the sheer energy in the locker room. They'd actually spent 11 seasons grinding it out in ringette before transitioning to hockey.
They played a heavy, determined style that elevated everyone around them. You saw their offensive output and solid execution on the ice every single shift.

A Crushing Blow to the Bearcats

Minor hockey in rural Alberta demands grueling travel schedules. It's endless road trips, icy winter highways, and late nights chasing the sport they love.
Harry Collinge High School in Hinton felt the immediate, devastating impact of this tragedy. Classes were shut down as raw grief swept through the hallways.
Because these girls simply loved the game. They grew up idolizing the Edmonton Oilers and dreamed of dominating local adult leagues together long after their minor hockey days ended.
Jasper Minor Sports president Grant Bradley confirmed the entire local organization is absolutely gutted. The dynamic inside that dressing room won't ever be the same without their constant presence.
A special benefit game is officially scheduled for this coming Friday to honor their memory. The region is stepping up, organizing a massive 50/50 raffle to support the grieving families.
This reality hits the global hockey family incredibly hard. We've seen these heartbreaking highway tragedies happen far too often across the Canadian provinces.
Their absence leaves a massive void that no amount of time can truly fill. Both players approached life with the same intensity they brought to a frantic penalty kill.
Massive stick taps for Danica and Kayla. The Bearcats organization will carry their powerful legacy forward every single time the puck drops.
