The NHL trade deadline regularly produces chaotic storylines, but the Nashville Predators just authored one of the most bizarre transactions in recent memory.
Right in the middle of their latest matchup, general manager Barry Trotz pulled the trigger on a deal that literally ended a player's night in the blink of an eye.
According to reporter Mark Scheig, gritty forward Cole Smith mysteriously found himself permanently parked on the Nashville bench right next to goaltender Juuse Saros.
His final stat line for the evening? A mind-boggling three total seconds of ice time logged in the first period before his shift was abruptly terminated.
Nashville Predators and Vegas Golden Knights pull off bizarre trade
Following the final horn, Predators management officially confirmed the strange sequence of events.
Smith had been actively traded to the Vegas Golden Knights while the game was ongoing. In exchange for the hard-hitting winger, Nashville acquired defensive prospect Christian Sedoff and a 2028 third-round draft pick.
For Vegas, acquiring Smith provides an immediate physical "bump" to their bottom six. His heavy forecheck and "solid execution" are exactly what the Golden Knights crave as they fortify their roster for another grueling postseason gauntlet.
Meanwhile, head coach Andrew Brunette and the Nashville coaching staff had to instantly adjust their transition game and line combinations on the fly, essentially playing a man down for 59 minutes and 57 seconds.
Sitting Smith the moment the deal was finalized was a necessary, albeit awkward, precaution to protect the trade from falling apart due to a freak injury.
While mid-game trades are exceptionally rare, securing future draft capital and a young blueliner like Sedoff is a tidy piece of business for Trotz as the March 6 cutoff rapidly approaches.
Smith gets a "clean slate" in Vegas, but his final shift in Smashville will be remembered as a mere three-second cameo.
