In a move that caught the attention of many, Travis Dermott, an NHL defenseman, used Pride Tape in his game, even in the face of a ban imposed by NHL's Commissioner, Gary Bettman.
I just noticed Travis Dermott is quietly using @PrideTape tonight! This is what allyship looks like folks! #Yotes #HockeyISforEveryone
Many assume that a fine from Bettman awaits Dermott for this act. However, the NHL rule book might have Dermott's back in this situation.
Rulebook in Dermott's Favor
The specific rule that could shield Dermott is Rule 10.1 in the NHL rulebook.
Dermott, by rule, is permitted to use whatever color tape he wants... and this wasn't part of any special night event.
With the rulebook stating that players can use adhesive tape of any color for reinforcement or puck control, Dermott's choice to use Pride Tape seems to be within his rights.
Adhesive tape of any color may be wrapped around the stick at any place for the purpose of reinforcement or to improve control of the puck
It remains to be seen if the NHL's legal team can find a way around this rule or if Dermott will continue to challenge Bettman's directive.
