Swayman & the Bruins have been stuck in a long public contract dispute with no resolution in sight. On Monday morning, things escalated as the Bruins started negotiating with Swayman and his agent through the media.
During the Bruins media availability, General Manager Don Sweeney and head coach Jim Montgomery hinted that Swayman was unlikely to be the starting goalie for opening night. But the situation took an even sharper turn when team president Cam Neely spoke.
When asked about the Swayman situation, Neely revealed the Bruins latest offer without going into specifics but made a striking comment:
This confirms that the Bruins offered a 8 year $64M contract averaging $8M a year.
Despite the significant offer, Swayman has not accepted the deal. Neely said that Swayman is trying to set a new standard for goalie contracts in the NHL which explains why there's a hold out.
When Neely was asked if that was indeed still the case, the Bruins president answered in the affirmative.
The situation has gotten tense with no clear end in sight.
