Back in June, it was widely reported that Laine asked new General Manager Don Waddell for a fresh start with another team. Since then, Waddell hired Dean Evason, the former Minnesota Wild coach, to lead Columbus, but this move hasn't changed Laine's stance.
Mark Sheig of The Hockey Writers reported that he spoke with Waddell about a possible trade. While there's no new update on that front, Waddell did mention that Laine met with Coach Evason, where he reiterated his desire to leave Columbus.
Recently, Laine and his fiancée launched a mental health initiative called "From Us To You," aiming to give back to those who supported him during his time away.
Laine hasn't played in the NHL since December 2023 due to an injury, so he'll likely need time to regain his form. However, if he can return to his previous level, he could be a valuable offensive asset for any team. Laine's best season was in 2017-18 with the Winnipeg Jets, where he scored 44 goals, but he hasn't reached 30 goals in a season since.
