Erne found himself on the outside when the Oilers opted to bring in Corey Perry through free agency. Although the 28-year-old Erne has considerable NHL experience with 378 games under his belt, he might be subject to a claim by one of the other 31 NHL teams.
If he successfully clears waivers, Erne will return to AHL Bakersfield, where he had previously played four games earlier this season.
