Mark Spector, a reporter for the Edmonton Oilers, has sparked major backlash for offensive comments about Swedish players in the NHL.
Known for being a controversial figure among hockey fans, Spector, a senior columnist for Sportsnet, is under fire again. During a Q&A on X while flying to Dallas, a fan asked him about the Vancouver Canucks' prospects for the next few seasons. In his response, Spector made a xenophobic comment about the team's European players.
"Perfect coach for that team.
Miller excellent leader. Hughes will grow. Good D.
Many skill guys either small or perimeter guys. Got pushed out - EL40 esp.
Depth can't all be Euro skill guys. Some? Sure - not all.
Need more Saskatchewan, less Stockholm."

This comment was met with swift condemnation from the hockey community, who defended Swedish players and compared Spector's remarks to those of former NHL commentator Don Cherry, who was fired after a racist rant. When challenged, Spector doubled down, saying, "Just spittin' the truth here fella."

With widespread scrutiny, all eyes are now on Sportsnet to see if they will take action against Spector. However, as their senior columnist, his job might not be at risk. Fans hope that Sportsnet will address the issue to prevent future incidents.
